Creative Movement Practices and The Octarine Accord are elated to announce non-equity auditions for the world premiere production of Synapse, by local Houston actor and playwright Shanae’a Moore! This production will be directed by Andrew Roblyer, founder of The Octarine Accord, with movement direction by Sarah Sneesby, founder of Creative Movement Practices, and will take place at the MATCH in Matcbox 3, December 13-21, 2024.

About the Show

Synaesthesia: a neurological condition that is characterized by experiencing more than one sense at a time. The crossing of sense pathways in the brain leading to: ex. seeing sound, feeling colors, hearing numbers etc.

“What if the way I see the world isn’t a mistake? Maybe it’s the way the world truly is.” Lyra, an angry young synaesthesiate locked up, thinking herself useless and damaged, is approached by a mysterious person beckoning her into a new world of promised meaning. He tells her he can turn her disorder into the ability to read and repurpose the earth’s energy. If she follows him, she will be faced with impossible tasks, endless danger, a deeper world of magic, and the pressure of saving the planet. Having nothing to lose, she jumps into this new world and into a family of misfits just trying to survive every day. They are hunted by multiple groups trying to get to Lyra, as she struggles to grasp her own powers. Growing into the most ragtag mismatch of chosen family, they work exhaustingly to learn themselves and their world in time to save it.

Themes of family, passion, healing, climate change, and what it is to be wildly different lead the audience on an epic journey through the senses come to life. Synapse is a unique window into the mind of a neurodivergent bridging the gap between science and fantasy, this story redefines the idea of the “condition” or “gift”.
