Introducing: The Acting Gym

Get Your Acting Muscles in Shape!
Are you an actor ready to take your skills to the next level? Just like hitting the gym to sculpt your body, honing our craft as actors takes practice and commitment. The Octarine Accord is excited to introduce the Acting Gym, home to new kinds of practice opportunities that will help you flex those acting muscles and reach your full potential!

Whether you attended a conservatory acting program, have never taken an acting class in your life, or are somewhere in between, this is an opportunity for you to grow.

Phase one: Trainer Guided Workouts

Our first phase is made up of short sessions customized to your needs as an actor, guided by an expert coach and director. And we have two different options for you!

Solo Workout:
25 minute Monologue Work

This option is perfect for actors preparing for an audition, looking to challenge themselves with a character type they aren’t usually cast as, or perhaps aren’t able to commit to scene practice with a buddy but still want to get a workout in.

Actors who register for a Solo Workout will choose any monologue of 5 minutes or less and identify 2-3 goals for their workout.

We recommend picking something that gets you excited!

Team Workout:
50 minute Scene Work

This option is great for actors who don’t want to work alone, want to tackle a larger text, or whose goals are more related to the interplay with other actors on stage. This option will require some pre-workout effort in the form of at least one team rehearsal in advance of your workout.

2-3 actors may register together for a Team workout and should select any scene of 10 minutes or less. Each actor will identify 2 goals for their workout.

We recommend picking something that gets you excited!

Now accepting registrations for the first day of Trainer-Guided Workouts on November 26th, 2023!

Where:
Garza Studios in Second Ward

When:
November 26th, from 9am-2pm and 4pm-9pm. We currently have divided the times evenly between Solo and Team workouts, see the schedule below.

Who:
Any actor(s) age 15 or above. Note that actors under the age of 18 will need to have a legal guardian present. Additionally, any actors registering for a Solo workout are welcome to bring a friend or family member with them if they are uncomfortable working with their trainer one-on-one.

Cost:

Registration requires a $10 deposit to cover the cost of the space rental. Beyond that, your workout is pay-what-you-can. After your workout, you will receive a link to pay what you are able up to what you feel like your workout was worth; you will not be asked to pay anything in person, and nobody other than your trainer will know how much you paid. No guilt trips! (If you would like a suggested amount, we will provide one on request)

Please note: your $10 deposit is fully refundable until November 12, 2023; after that point, it will only be refunded if an alternate registrant is found.

About your trainer

The trainer for this session is Andrew Roblyer (they/he), a queer, nonbinary, neurodivergent theatre producer, director, designer, writer, actor, and founder of The Octarine Accord, Houston's first and only production company dedicated to speculative fiction storytelling. Formerly, they were the founder and Artistic Director of This Is Water Theatre, the first-ever professional theatre company in Bryan/College Station.

Over the past decade, Andrew has developed a reputation for guiding actors to incredible performances across genres and styles of theatre while focusing on actor empowerment. They have studied many different acting techniques, including Stanislavski, Adler, Meisner, Practical Aesthetics, and Hagen, including attending the Hagen Teacher Training at HB Studios in NYC in 2016. The breadth of their experience and training allows them to identify the best tools for working with each individual actor.

Since 2020, Andrew has focused heavily on expanding their understanding of and approach to acting and directing outside of white Western methodologies, and is outspoken about traumatic practices in both rehearsal rooms and acting classrooms.
